Why You Need To Be Your Own Biggest Promoter

Picture yourself in front of a potential customer.  They’re just about to buy something from you.  They’re on the fence.  What they need is for you to be the leader, the confident seller.  They need you to be excited and personally sold on the value of what they’re considering purchasing.  Sometimes they need to know more details and they want to hear the background story behind the product or service to know how it will help them personally.

You have two choices.  Will you believe 100% in yourself and what you’re selling and speak confidently about the benefits and solutions it provides?  Or, will you doubt yourself, your experience and training and the value of what you’re selling?

If you don’t think your service or product is valuable, why would anyone else?  And why would you promote something you don’t think is valuable in the first place?  You need to be your own biggest promoter to help others see their need (and how you can fill it).

This might be holding you back from promoting yourself…

Undervaluing yourself and your work because you’re comparing yourself to others.  Comparing yourself to others only makes your insecurity grow.  It also can make you feel like conforming is better than being authentic.  Trust your gut.  What you have going on in business is unique and should stay that way.  THAT is what will sell.  Plus, how are you supposed to promote something that you’re not uber passionate about, that you don’t truly connect with?  Be your authentic self.  That is what’s most attractive.

Fear of others thinking you’re being pushy or arrogant.  I was coaching a client earlier this year who felt this way.  She didn’t want to seem overly confident when potential customers were considering a purchase because she thought that would turn them away.  When she realized she was just telling herself a story, that it wasn’t reality, she tried a new strategy.

Within a few months she started making more sales, felt quite connected to the new customers and started enjoying the selling process.  She was over the moon happy with how it felt to give others her gift instead of feeling like she was needy.

In truth, not promoting yourself will hurt your career, yet many business owners feel they’re being polite when they give customers space.  Thinking too much about how others may perceive you holds you back from ever standing out and being seen by the very people who need your solution.

If you believe in what you have to offer, not promoting it is withholding exactly what your future customer needs.

What are your thoughts?  Is it a challenge for you to promote yourself?  I’d love to hear about it.  Have you faced this challenge and overcome it?  If so, I’d love to hear what helped.  Please share below or drop me a line so we can connect further on this…
