Relentless Focus:  Feeling Accomplished Can Be Easy

You wake up on the weekend, grab your coffee and sit down to review your week.  Somehow you’ve managed to avoid the very tasks that meant the most to you, again.

Ticking your to-do’s off the list doesn’t bring joy and fulfillment.  Relentlessly focusing on what’s highly valuable does.  So why does focusing seem so difficult?  Any kind of workout is difficult and this type of mind training takes work!

It’s easier to do the simple tasks rather than the ones that take more time and energy.

“Busyness is what you give your time to; Purpose is what you give your heart to.”  Robert Holden

Here are a few steps that will improve your focus.  Let’s explore them.

Your Definition Of Success Matters

Get as clear as possible about what success means to you.  I remember attending a workshop led by a friend of a friend who is also a coach to leaders.  Part of what each person created that night was a clear and personal definition of future success.  If you don’t have this for yourself you’ll chase what makes others happy or proud of you.

Define your own success

Be Honest With Yourself

After defining what success means to me, this coach asked me if the goals I’d created were my own.  For a second, I thought that was a rather silly question.  Then I thought it was one of the best questions I’d ever been asked.  Sometimes we need others to help us see more clearly.

When was the last time you asked yourself if the goals you set for yourself would truly make you happy?

Sometimes we think if others priorities are making them happy, they would make us happy too.  Rather, seek out the type of success that would make you happy and don’t worry about what others might think.  Worrying about how others might view you really kills your ability to focus.

When you have your own success defined you’ll have a clear picture of your priorities.

Decide What Needs To Take The Back Seat

Even things that are good can take up precious time.  Choose what the best things you’ll focus on for 2019.  The end of the year is quickly approaching!  To be relentlessly focused, some things you enjoy spending your time on will have to wait.

Maybe you will need to stop focusing so much on how the goal will be met and rather on the next step you need to take.  Maybe what needs to take a back seat is having the house in consistently immaculate order.  Or maybe you need to put your energy sucking relationships in the back seat.

Relentless focus requires you to get clear on what you really want, not what you think would make others happy.  Then, take action.  Today, ask yourself what would make you happy if you could only focus on three priorities over 2019.  What three priorities, if accomplished, would add immense value to your life?  I’d love for you to share them with me!
